One big initiative

I’m pleased to say that we are expecting. What we are expecting, we don’t know yet but feel free to speculate.

In my hope to make the world a better place, one change at a time, this might be the biggest iniative yet.

Thank you everyone for all your well-wishes and support.

IWIYW The Red Dress Ride

Today is Earth Day and it seems fitting that it is also the day I deliver on my promise that I made at Earth Hour as part of my I Will If You Will challenge.

Since 110 people committed to riding a bicycle to work at least once this year, it is also the day I am uploading the video of me riding in my wife’s dress on East Coast Road. Hopefully, some of you will continue to ride to work without the incentive to see me embarrass myself.

Take a look at the video and keep thinking of ways to reduce your impact on the environment. Enjoy!

Singapore needs more bike lanes

When I see Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority awarding out prizes that bear Lee Kuan Yew’s prestigious name on it to New York City, I feel a sense of indignation (New York wins Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize, 22 March 2012 1 ).

It really is time for Singapore to get some more bicycle lanes and for the government to start supporting a more sustainable approach to transportation.

  1. The more cynical side of me would say that this is ‘prize’ was awarded to coincide with a certain VIP visit to the island nation. I mean really, does New York really care what Singapore thinks of its urban redevelopment plan? []

Challenge accepted!

Well, it seems most of you want to see me in my wife’s little red dress as part of my Earth Hour’s I Will If You Will challenge. Why that would be interesting for any of you is beyond me – I would have thought most of you would have not accepted the challenge, just to avoid seeing me in that dress. But well done to the 1071 of you who have accepted the challenge to cycle at least once to work this year. Feels good, doesn’t it?

I hope that I have inspired more of you to think about the environment and our impact on it. Small things like cycling to work once this year may not seem like a big thing, but hopefully it inspires bigger changes.

To celebrate Earth Hour this year, I’m joining the I Will If You Will challenge. My challenge: I will ride my bicycle in my wife’s dress IF 100 of you commit to riding your bike to work at least once this year.

Since Earth Hour’s I will if you will video upload feature is broken (we won’t let that affect getting involved in something good), the video resides on Youtube and my site. To accept the challenge, visit the challenge site - http://goo.gl/BdoLm.

In memoriam: Oma Engels

Goodbye, Oma. Old and gentle hands are my last memory of you but not the only ones.

I remember our talks of long ago. Your ideas, morals and compassion helped guide a young man to find his own way through life. While you might have lost your sense of grit in the later years, it will always shine brightly in my memories of you. You were a woman of faith and I always felt that you never lost that faith in me.

I am proud to be your grandson and to carry on your legacy to the world through to the next generation and beyond.

You’ve reached journey’s end, and a rest well-deserved. God speed your journey to Opa and may you now be together forever.

Justice for cyclists

Imagine a driver killing someone by driving recklessly and then driving off without rendering assistance to those they have injured. And when the driver has been identified, it takes two years for the case to get to trial with what appears to be privilege and wealth preventing a speedy trial.

When this happens in China with a baby and a truck driver, most of Singapore joined the rest of the world in condemning this travesty of justice. Yet when two Singaporean cyclists are hit by a Singaporean doctor, the trial takes two years to see the inside of a courtroom.

Singapore Red Cross Donations

I’m pleased to update that a total of S$2600 was donated to the Singapore Red Cross last week with my meeting with them.

Here’s proof that the money was donated1.

Great job guys and the support for this initiative has been better than I had expected.

There are more initiatives being planned now, so stay tuned. If you have any suggestions on future initiatives, please feel free to drop me a note.

The Good Bean Project aims to raise S$1,000 for the Singapore Red Cross Society at the Safari Zoo Run 2012 on February 5, 2012. Contribute by pledging an amount against a time you think I will complete a 12km run in at the GBP Safari Zoo Run 2012 page.

Wow – donations now stand at S$2,340!

It’s been a while since I gave an update on this initiative for the Safari Zoo Run 2012. I’m currently chasing the remaining handful of donations that should be in this week. I’ll be meeting with the Singapore Red Cross next week to pass them the donations.

However, I’m pleased to share that I currently have in donations S$2,340 already which means that we’ve exceeded the amount pledged. Credit goes to the YanziUnlimited fan club – they’ve managed to organise even more donations after the run! A big thanks to all of you who donated to support me – I hadn’t realized I had so many of you running with me!

Expect an update next week once I have passed the Singapore Red Cross. Thank you all for your patience!

Official timings out

The Good Bean Project at the Safari Zoo Run 2012

The official results are out at the Safari Zoo Run 2012 site – my Gun Time was 1:12:15.

But my Personal Best was the Net Time of 1:11:36.

Which means I came in under the shortest time called of 75 minutes. Happy days.

Interestingly, the rankings put me at 279 out of 1294, but I think it’s meaningless because it’s based on Gun Time.
